Day 1 - Introduction to Dementia

  • The Causes of dementia
  • Changes in the brain and how this affects key functions
  • Common signs and symptoms
  • Other factors which cause confusion
  • Current treatments 

Day 2 - Person Centred Approach to Assessment & Planning

  • What Person Centred Care means and how to implement it
  • How capacity and consent play an integral part in assessments
  • The benefits of Person Centred Care
  • How to use life histories in planning care
  • How to work with family care givers

Day 3 - Communication Skills

  •  Understand how dementia impacts on communication skills
  • Learn techniques to overcome barriers to communication
  • Understand how life histories can enhance communication
  • Learn to use active listening skills to improve communication

Day 4 - Positive Interactions in Dementia Care

  • Recognise the unique needs of the individual
  • How attitudes affect care delivery
  • Recognise the effects of exclusion and discrimination on care delivery
  • Understanding dementia  in different groups

About the Presenter:

Caroline has studied dementia care at post graduate level and has played a significant role in the development of dementia care training in the UK being an advocate for advancing practice in psycho-therapeutic approaches to care.  She is most well known to her contribution to the 'knowledge sets' and her developing work in the new QCF Dementia Qualifications developed in the UK.  She has published a range of material to support learning and development in this area and continues to evolve her training courses to every increasing engaging and thought provoking heights.

Caroline has come to New Zealand to support the development of dementia care services.  In partnership with Clinical Update Caroline is delivering a four day dementia care training programme.  The course is suitable for both registered nurses and caregivers.
